A big problems in any classroom is a lack of mobility. Constricting kids' movements only aggravates them, making it harder to them to learn. Their bodies suffer. A sitting kid is also often bored. The desks/chairs the kids currently have are very old and rigid (i.e. not kid friendly). And since chairs don't necessarily match desks in this underfunded school, some kids can't even get their legs under them! Also fluids tend to pool if the body doesn't move. This is a huge health issue! We should always move at least every hour but ideally every 22 minutes. Not moving encourages humans of any age to dissociate and drift off. This is especially true of kids.
So next on our list are new tables and chairs for room 220 (we're fundraising for this too).
In our plan is a gathering space we call the Wonder Tree... Bet you're wondering what that is. You'll hear about this in a future glob very soon — we don't want to get ahead of ourselves!
There are 2 schools in this building. And all the teachers in both schools are coming by to see what we're doing. Smiles, amazed looks and light bulbs going off like crazy! Our message to them, 'We're hoping our transformation of room 220 is highly contagious. We're hoping that other classrooms transform and, as a result, in the next year or 2 you see a huge difference in students and teachers here as a result.'
In their spare time, we asked our kid volunteers to collaborate on the redesign of the cafeteria and the school playground too. We're hoping the school will consider some of their good ideas (OK, not the bouncy house, but their other improvements).
